About Sally Mae

I am highly skilled in the Lettering Arts with twenty years experience working professionally which has gained me an international reputation.

My five year training was first at Reigate School of Art where I studied Calligraphy, Heraldry and Illumination then at The Roehampton Institute, London where I continued my studies on their Calligraphy and Bookbinding course gaining a Certificate and Diploma.

After leaving College I started working freelance and became a visiting lecturer at The Roehampton Institute teaching Calligraphy and Illumination. Other teaching assignments included International Conferences at St Louis and Minneapolis and The Society of Scribes and Illuminators Advanced Training Scheme. During the 1990s I made two videos that are now available on DVD, Gilding for Calligraphers and Modern Gilding for Calligraphers. These cover the traditional skills of stretching vellum, gilding and illuminating and are acknowledged as valuable teaching aids.

I have been a Fellow of the Society of Scribes and Illuminators (FSSI) since 1991 and my work is in many public and private collections at home and abroad.

In 1999 I joined a team of scribes, illuminators and artists working on a commissioned hand written and illuminated copy of The Bible. I worked full time for six years on this project using my skills in all areas including calligraphy, lettering and illumination. For examples of my work and more information on this unique piece of work visit The Saints Johns Bible Project.

Now I am working in my studio in Seaford, East Sussex as a freelance lettering artist providing a quality professional calligraphy, lettering and illumination service and also producing my own original art works. Projects are both large and small but in every case I work very closely with the client.
